I’ve been on both ends of the application process. When I was younger, applying for jobs was a rough process. In today’s world, it seems even more competitive. As a Creative Director, I’m on the opposite when where I’m the one reviewing the applications and interviewing candidates.
Before I bring in any candidates, I have requirements in order for me to consider them for the position. First, do they have a portfolio? And is it strong? Does the resume showcase a solid foundation of typography? All of these requirements are nuanced when it comes to the application process.
With all of this in mind, I was curious about what my first application was like and whether would I consider myself for a job?
In the video below, I review that application with the same requirements as I would candidates today.
Takeaways
There were some lows, but a LOT of highs in the application. One thing I want to mention is that on the receiving end back then, I had no idea if my application was strong or not. I only know today what to look out for and what level things need to be at to be competitive in the industry. When reviewing your next application, consider answering the questions below.
1. On your resume, did you use a grid?
2. How strong is your typography? Are there areas where you can create white space? Can you add more contrast or maybe less contrast if you think it needs to be finessed?
3. Are each of your portfolio pieces projects that you are proud of?
4. Does your portfolio showcase your personality or point of view as a designer?
5. Are you happy with your application
No one can answer the above except you. You have to be honest about it. If you’re not finding success, there must be something you can fix or work on. Understand that we all start from somewhere. As long as you continue to grow, you will eventually get that opportunity!
